An amazing trip with some killer uphills and some equally rewarding down hill sections...it all proved to provide a few giggles!
Well thanks to Will (Blomfield), we've managed to download the video shots of the descent that we took on a specially adapted/ harnessed video camera.
Its steeper than it looks and we took in the 'hills' of Mam Tor, Kinder and down Jacob's Ladder. Its steeper than it looks and trickier.......................................................................................................honest!
Introduction
This is a superb, challenging ride with a real ‘wilderness feel’. Taking in some spectacular scenery (particularly if there is a dusting of snow), this is a tough cookie that builds to a spectacular finale, crossing a 540m high shoulder of Kinder Scout and then descending Jacob’s Ladder.
Traditionally ridden in the reverse direction, riding it this way will give you the opportunity of staying on your bike throughout – in the reverse direction you will be pushing your bike up the Ladder.
Don’t underestimate this ride, though it weighs in at a mere 22km, some sections are remote and cover some very demanding terrain – and right near the end it throws in one of the longest climbs in the Peak District!
The Ride
From Edale, a short road climb leads to a tricky climb up Hollins Cross, which begins easily on grass but gets tough, especially in damp conditions, as the gradient kicks up. Stick with it – it’s all rideable! Descend Mam Tor for a quick adrenalin rush and hit the climb up Rushup Edge (spectacular views). Plummet down into Roych Clough and tackle the climb up the other side. Contour around Mount Famine to an excit- ing descent and get ready for the big one – 300m of ascent, gruelling at first, easing slightly in the middle then rocky and tech- nical at the end. You’ll be well rewarded at the top, because the descent of Jacob’s Ladder is a real plum prize – especially on a quiet day when there aren’t many walkers around. From here it’s a pleasant cruise back to the car park.
